Eco-friendly toilet paper

Bamboo Toilet Paper Rolls No. 2 come individually wrapped in colorful, Instagram-worthy fabric, and there’s no plastic used in the packaging. But it’s not as soft as our pick from Seventh Generation.

The Caboo Bamboo bath fabric was polarizing. Some testers found it quite serviceable, but others found it rough and not durable enough.

Tushy’s bamboo toilet paper also comes individually wrapped in beautiful plastic-free packaging, but it is very thin and scratchy.

The Reel Tree-Free Bamboo Toilet Paper feels rough compared to other bamboo toilet papers we’ve tried.

PlantPaper’s bamboo toilet paper is FSC certified, but it’s rough, thin, and tears too easily.

Who Gives A Crap 100% recycled toilet paper is extremely popular among eco-friendly people and comes in individual, attractive, plastic-free packaging. But we thought it was rude.

Neither Whole Foods 365 Sustainly Soft toilet paper nor its 100% recycled toilet paper were as durable or easy to use as our picks.

Traditional toilet paper

Neither Presto from Amazon! The Ultra-Strong and its thicker 3-layer option weren’t worth the extra cost over our budget Ultra-Soft option from the same brand. Both are currently unavailable.

Kirkland Signature Toilet Paper from Costco was the widest toilet paper in our test pool (rolls often don’t fit in regular holders). But this was the most impressive feature of this mediocre newspaper. It was neither the softest nor the strongest in our test pool and was quite dusty. This was surprising given this toilet paper’s long-standing reputation; Diehard Costco toilet paper users on Reddit are speculating that pandemic-related supply chain issues have led to the company’s toilet paper demise.

Charmin Essentials Strong and Charmin Essentials Soft felt scratchy and seemed to require a lot more paper than we selected to get the job done.

When compared directly to our top picks, the Charmin Ultra Soft, Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong and Quilted Northern Ultra Plush came out on top. No to our testers, ultra-soft, ultra-plush, or whatever.

Charmin Ultra Gentle and Scott ComfortPlus were fuzzy and tore too easily.

Scott 1000 was translucent and easy to tear.

Great Value’s Soft & Strong, Walmart’s Cascades, Cottonelle Ultra CleanCare, Virtue and Angel Soft were highlighted. No as soft or durable as our choice.
