Meta is already way ahead of the competition when it comes to the best smart glasses, but now the company is reportedly preparing to introduce a pair of Ray-Ban smart glasses aimed at users who actually wear glasses every day. Recipe-focused versions, codenamed Scriber and Blazer, could arrive as early as next week, Bloomberg reports.

Meta and its AI glasses hardware partner EssilorLuxottica are working on two pairs of AI-powered smart glasses aimed at people who require prescription lenses. Of course, you can already install prescription lenses into your existing Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, but these new models are designed specifically with that in mind.

It’s not entirely clear how exactly they’ll differ, although I’m guessing factors like battery life, design, and weight will be comparable to the existing Meta line. However, at the moment these are just speculations.

It’s all part of a broader approach to prescription users that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg teased during an earnings call earlier this year. “Billions of people wear glasses or contact lenses to correct their vision. And I think we’re in a moment similar to when smartphones came out, and obviously it was only a matter of time before all these flip phones turned into smartphones,” he said. “In a few years, it’s hard to imagine a world in which the majority of glasses people wear aren’t AI glasses.”

For those of us who have spent years traveling the world with prescription lenses, smart glasses have always felt like a gadget made for someone else. But the upcoming release of the Ray-Ban AI “Scriber” and “Blazer” glasses from Meta feels like the first time the tech giant is actually speaking our language. Unlike previous models that looked like technology first and glasses second, these new frames seem to be designed from the ground up with four eyes like me in mind. With new sleek rectangular and rounded styles, as well as rumored Wi-Fi 6 support for faster Meta AI response, this might finally be the time when I trade in my traditional frames for a pair that can actually respond.
