A brief introduction about yourself?
I am Nazile Bolat. I live in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. I work at a private company as a financial advisor. I am one of the founding members of Women in Street Turkey, and a member of Through The Lands Collective. I am also a member of the Zoneproject Collective, where we work on women-related issues. We completed a project and opened an exhibition in 2024.
How you began your journey in photography?
Until 2014, I only took souvenir photos. In 2014, I joined a photography club on the recommendation of a friend. After taking nature photos for about two years, I set out on a different path. During this process, I discovered street photography.

You describe yourself as someone who is “forever chasing light”, how does light shape your storytelling and influence the mood in your street photographs?
I see light not just as something that illuminates a scene, but as something that transforms it. Light constantly changes and refracts, disappears and reappears. With each change, the meaning of the scene also transforms, transcending reality and becoming timeless. Therefore, for me, light is not just a tool that makes the street visible, but an opportunity that allows me to reinterpret it.
Your work often feels very intuitive and poetic, how do you recognize the right moment in fast-moving street environments?
It is necessary to constantly observe the flow of the street and become part of its rhythm. I make decisions very quickly as events unfold, and I press the shutter button when everything is in balance. During this process, I observe human behavior and fleeting changes, because the right moment on the street reveals itself.

As the founder of Women in Street Turkey, how has building a community influenced your personal vision and growth as a street photographer?
Although photography often seems like an individual act, collective production transforms the work by bringing together different perspectives. Contact with diverse ideas constantly prompts me to question and refine my own way of seeing. Being part of a community also requires producing with a certain discipline, which makes my process more efficient and consistent. Furthermore, the communication and interaction we establish with different communities enhances my visual language.
Many of your images turn everyday scenes into something magical, what advice would you give photographers on transforming ordinary moments into compelling street photographs?
Ever since I started taking street photographs, I’ve been studying the work of master photographers. Initially, I was trying to understand how they shot, but over time I realized the real question was “why they shot.” This realization changed my perspective on the street. I believe there is powerful potential within seemingly ordinary moments; the important thing is to recognize the emotion and the rupture within that moment. Above all, it requires patience and spending time on the street.

To broaden my perspective, I watch films and read photography books, as well as books from various other fields. Drawing from different disciplines expands my way of seeing.
Among the photographers who have influenced me the most are Alex Webb, Vivian Maier, Trent Parke, Narelle Autio, and Josef Koudelka. However, I don’t limit myself to just one name; I value drawing inspiration from this diversity because each photographer has a different world and approach.
